Always Breeland
We are off to our first road game of the year against the vaunted Cool Springs Middle in downtown Forest City, the largest city in our county. They always had a formidable team. I must admit I love the Cool Springs gym. Unlike most other Middle School gyms with a half-moon backboard, the basketball goals were a full square.
I look over at my seatmate. She is a vision of sweetness, kindness, and thoughtfulness. I feel the eyes of my friend Breeland, cheerleader extraordinaire, and her fellow mean girls staring a hole of hate into the back of my sweet lovely girlfriend Dee.
I don’t want to interrupt my sweet thoughts of her with negative energy. We are all piled in on our bus: the boy and girl teams, and our cheerleaders. The cheerleaders usually cheer at home games but were along for the 15-minute bus ride to Cool Springs. We get off the bus. Bree comes up from behind us.
“Hey, Kade. Hey Dee. Could I borrow your boyfriend for a second?”
“Sure, I will meet you inside,” Dee says.
I don’t take my eyes off my girl until she enters the side door. Bree punches my shoulder.
“Put your tongue back in your mouth. You stare at her like she’s a T-Bone steak and you’re some love-starved hound dog.”
