American Hoop Star
Year Of The Tiger
These are stories from my time at University as a college hoop star. Our team mascot is a Tiger. The names have been changed to protect the innocent and not-so-innocent coeds.
Ordinary Monday Night
An ordinary Monday night had me exiting the Team Cafeteria around 9:30 p.m. I stayed late at study hall preparing for a Research Marketing Exam the next day.
Mama, the head cook, left it open a little late for us stragglers. I’m all alone which is rare because at least one of my teammates always accompanies me.
I hurry to make a couple of roast beef sandwiches and grab a handful of cookies that I stuff in my bookbag. I exit listening to my Walkman when I spy a familiar figure sitting on one of the picnic tables used for outside dining. It’s Stephanie.
She’s a part of the campus’s forbidden flowers. The powers that be have placed me on a No Fraternization Rule due to the incident with the Preacher’s Wife (a story for another day). They include cheerleaders, tiger belles, faculty daughters, and wives.
